Following through on your study of languages – or – Where to find the correct study motivation?
The first step in developing language skills is deciding yourself that now is the right time to study. Motives behind this step will differ for everyone. For some its self-actualisation, or seeing themselves speaking a foreign language fluently in some future conversation while travelling. Others are driven by professional advancement or the prospect of opening new doors in the labour market. The most important next step, however, is identical for everyone – to correctly motivate yourself and successfully reach the goal you’ve set.
Ditch unrealistic goals and substitute them with manageable interim targets
Your goal sounded clear – “learn a language”, but how to get there is not always obvious. The main reason is that this goal is much too general. You could specify more detail, as in “learn a language in a month.” However, having a goal so unrealistic won’t help you much either. What’s more, when you discover that learning doesn’t happen as fast as you imagined, your motivation may quickly vanish. Replace your goal with something more attainable, which, when achieved, will give you the feeling of a job well done and keep motivation levels high. For example, this might involve learning several sentences that are important for you, or a definite number of words. Gradually, make these milestones more challenging.
Every bit of progress counts, which is why “rewards” are important
Every achievement should be marked somehow, such occasions demand that we reward ourselves. The reward can be very modest – a favourite snack or little gift. This small reward shows your brain that your efforts have paid off, boosting your desire to persevere in your studies.
Find an occasion to put your knowledge to the test
There’s an immense benefit when you try and put your knowledge into practice. So seek out opportunities for using your acquired language abilities. It could be on holiday abroad, in conversation with a native speaker, or watching a film in a foreign language.
Learn what suits you best when studying
Do you prefer self-study or having lessons with a teacher? Is online education or face-to-face group courses or individual courses better? The answer to these questions should be based on your prior experience with studying.
